[Intro by Arvind Kumar]
With a B. Tech from NIT Warangal and ~6 years’ experience professional experience in the automotive sector, Vamsi’s career spanned engineering and middle-management roles.
He had applied to IIM-A and ISB in the previous application cycle but unfortunately couldn’t convert either.
As a re-applicant, he didn’t want to leave any stone unturned. He retook the GMAT Focus Edition, and scored a 635 GFE. Given the highly competitive pool, he knew he had to go beyond numbers and have strong application essays and interviews.
From the start, admitStreet’s honest feedback and structured approach helped Vamsi shape a strong re-application. Our brainstorming sessions pushed him to uncover impactful stories, while essay and CV reviews refined the narrative, and mock interviews perfected his delivery.
The result? Vamsi successfully secured admission from IIM-A PGPX.
This success story dives into Vamsi’s background, why he wanted to pursue an MBA, his application strategy, steps taken to strengthen his re-application, interview experience and advise for prospective applicants.
Over to Vamsi, to share his success story in his own words.
Background and Motivation
I’m a mechanical engineering graduate from the National Institute of Technology, Warangal. After graduation, I spent over five years in the automotive industry as an Industrial Automation Engineer at Maruti Suzuki.
During my time in the automotive industry, I witnessed the rise of electric vehicles (EVs) and how they are rapidly transforming the traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) landscape. This disruption sparked my interest, and I realized that joining the EV industry at its nascent stage would provide tremendous learning opportunities and a chance to contribute meaningfully.
Through my research, I discovered that product managers play a key role in shaping industries during their early phases.
I already possessed some transferable skills for this role, but I knew an MBA would fill the gaps and better position me to make the switch. That clarity and the potential to grow in a dynamic industry motivated me to pursue an MBA.
Application Strategy
I began my GMAT preparation in March 2023 with a self-study approach using GMAC’s official materials, both online and offline.
For two months, I dedicated 2–3 hours on weekdays and 5–6 hours on weekends to preparation, followed by a month of mock tests. I scored 690 (V35, Q48) on my first attempt in August.
Although the score was below my target, I applied to three schools that year, including IIM-A and ISB, and got interview calls from all of them. Unfortunately, I couldn’t convert any.
As a reapplicant, I didn’t want to leave any stone unturned. I revised my strategy for the GMAT Focus Edition, preparing for two months and landing a 635 GFE score.
While not ideal, I focused on other parts of my application, including my professional background, application essays and interviews, to strengthen my case to the Admissions Committees.
Steps to strengthen IIM-A Re-application
My undergraduate degree from a reputed institute like NIT Warangal lent credibility to my academic profile.
Professionally, my experience at Maruti Suzuki exposed me to large-scale industrial automation, setting me apart from candidates with similar backgrounds. Transitioning into a middle management role at an early stage of my career further added value, as it showcased my leadership potential and readiness for greater responsibilities.
I focused on showcasing growth and alignment with IIM-A’s expectations. I highlighted my transition into a middle management role, which reflected my readiness for leadership. I also joined Toastmasters to hone my public speaking skills and present my story more compellingly.
For my essays, admitStreet helped me link my strengths—like my ability to envision opportunities beyond the status quo—with IIM-A’s “Preparation for Top Management” module. This demonstrated my interest and commitment to the program.
I also crafted a clear narrative around my post-MBA goals, making it easier for the admissions committee to see my fit for the program.
Interview Experience
The interview was intense and challenging.
It began with an extempore topic on AI, where I took a stance that the panel disagreed with. They kept challenging my position, but I stood firm and defended my perspective, which I believe worked in my favor.
The interview continued with questions about my experience and how it aligned with my post-MBA goals. The interviewers cross-questioned every response, but I stayed composed and consistent. While the process was nerve-wracking, I walked out feeling I had given it my best shot.
I prepared responses to standard B-school questions, like “Why MBA?” and “Why IIM-A?” I also tailored my answers to highlight how I could contribute to IIM-A’s cohort. For the extempore, I kept myself updated with current affairs and practiced structuring my thoughts quickly and effectively.
Experience working with admitStreet
When I started looking for MBA consulting services, I explored several options and even took a few free calls. admitStreet stood out because of their fair evaluations and honest feedback. I appreciated their transparency about my chances and the mutual timelines we set for my applications.
The brainstorming sessions with admitStreet were thought-provoking. They pushed me to reflect deeply and share impactful stories from my personal and professional life. During essay and CV reviews, their feedback was precise and actionable, helping me craft a narrative that clearly connected my experience to my post-MBA goals.
The mock interviews were incredibly detailed. Their feedback on even the smallest aspects helped me refine my responses and present my story coherently during the actual interview.
admitStreet’s insights into IIM-A’s expectations were invaluable. My mentor had firsthand experience with the program, which gave me unique guidance. He helped me tailor my essays and interview responses to align with IIM-A’s focus on leadership and middle management experience. The last-minute tips for the interview were particularly helpful and gave me the confidence I needed to perform well.
Advice for Prospective Students
Start by reflecting on why you want an MBA—this question is inevitable in every interview. A clear understanding of your motivations not only helps you choose the right program but also strengthens your essays and interviews.
For Indian schools, ROI is an important factor to consider, so be strategic in shortlisting programs. And always spend time introspecting about what makes your story unique—that’s what will set you apart.
IIM-A values leadership and middle management experience, so make sure you highlight these in your essays. Be prepared for a grilling interview—professors will challenge you, but standing your ground with confidence can make a strong impression.
Finally, if you’re a reapplicant, focus on showcasing how you’ve grown since your last application. Even without direct feedback from the school, introspect on potential gaps and address them in your essays and CV. On the interview day, stay confident and be ready to defend your stance on any topic.
